2019 – 4 Love Languages of Design
IDEO’s Octopus Blogpost
Blogpost around the 4 love languages, techniques that designers can use to ensure their audience will fall in love with their idea. As designers, our job is to create things that improve people’s lives. To do so, designers must learn how to speak the languages of the various audiences we design for. It’s important for us all to recognize our own biases towards our favorite language, and have the empathy to listen and adapt to the other ones. Your design love language might be different from the person using your design.
2019 – IDSA Women in Design
Deep Dive Talk
Speaker and facilitator of an interactive group conversation at the Women in Design Deepdive May 3, 2019. This yearly deep dive gathering is built to celebrate the unique talents, initiatives and challenges of women in the industrial design industry. The day consisted of a series of exceptional lectures and interactive workshops that explore just who the female designer is within today’s shifting creative culture.
Marcelle van Beusekom, design director at IDEO, made a point to help us seek to understand. She took the whole crowd through an activity to evoke meaningful conversations. She had everyone choose sides when faced with stimulating questions like these: Will the future of a designer’s role be more curation or creation? Was your journey to design by chance or intention? The intent was to encourage people to listen to different perspectives on various topics.
2019 – Women in Design Conference 2019 Recap
Marcelle shared with the audience some of the conversation strategies they use at IDEO to help their clients reframe problems and get everyone on the same page. One of those techniques was called Creative Tensions, an activity Marcelle lead us through which involved reacting to two contradicting statements. There was a line drawn down the center of space and when the statements were presented, attendees were told to stand on whatever side they best aligned with. The choices included everything from “coffee vs. tea” to “intention vs. chance.” After each choice, a few women were asked to share their rationale for choosing the side that they did, giving us insight into other experiences.
